Kuala Lumpur, 25th – Malaysian universities, including Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah University, Sunway University, HELP University, and Hanxing Academy of Journalism and Communication, have embarked on collaborative agreements with 11 universities from China's Heilongjiang Province. This marks a significant milestone for educational exchange under the Belt and Road Initiative.
The Malaysia-China Higher Education Exchange Conference was jointly organized by the Malaysia-China Cultural Tourism Association, the Heilongjiang Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, and the Heilongjiang Provincial Department of Education. The event facilitated discussions on mutual cooperation in student and faculty exchanges, curriculum partnerships, and sustainable knowledge sharing.
The Malaysian delegation, led by Deputy Speaker of the Pahang State Assembly Lee Chin Chen and State Assemblyman Ho Chi Yang, engaged in productive discussions with senior Heilongjiang officials, including Vice Governor Wang Hesheng, Deputy Director of the Department of Education Cheng Shuang, and Vice Mayor of Daqing, Lü Jianguo. The meetings explored ways to enhance academic collaborations, deepen friendships, and foster mutual trust.
Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah University Vice Chancellor Prof. Dato’ Yuserrie described the conference as a pivotal step. “Following Harbin Institute of Technology’s visit to Pahang last year, it is now our turn to strengthen ties. This exchange provides new opportunities to bring Heilongjiang’s renowned engineering expertise to Pahang through 2+2 degree programs, creating talents aligned with Belt and Road development goals.”
Sunway University Vice Chancellor Dr Chai Lay Ching emphasized the evolving trend of institutional partnerships over offshore campuses. She outlined plans to collaborate on specialized programs, including traditional and modern medicine, psychology, agriculture, biotechnology, and business management.
HELP University Vice President Dr. Fiona Woo stressed the importance of fostering innovation and skills development. “Through knowledge sharing, universities can drive sustainable futures. This conference marks the first step in transforming the Belt and Road into a vibrant network of knowledge and innovation.”
Hanxin College’s Academic Director Ms Koh Siang Chai showcased Malaysia’s media education progress and discussed course collaborations with Heilongjiang University to expand career pathways for Chinese media graduates.
The three-day conference featured two leadership summits at Heilongjiang University in Harbin and Northeast Petroleum University in Daqing. Participants engaged in three official government dialogues, campus visits, and discussions on various cooperation models, including student exchanges, research collaborations, and joint programs. Initial outcomes are expected to be implemented within the next 3 to 6 months.
The event also received support from Malaysia’s Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) and sponsorship from ECI Higher Education Ltd.
Heilongjiang's academic representatives included Harbin Institute of Technology, Heilongjiang University, Heilongjiang University of Chinese Medicine, Harbin Medical University, Northeast Forestry University, Harbin University of Commerce, Northeast Petroleum University, Heilongjiang Bayi Agricultural University, Heilongjiang Commercial Vocational College, Heilongjiang Water Resources School, and the Daqing Division of Heilongjiang Academy of Sciences.
